I realized something about politics today while watching a bigoted idiot (oxymoron?) on Stossel try to explain how gay marriage affects traditional marriages.
Conservatives are hypocrites. They want the government to butt out of their lives, but they want the government to butt into the lives of others that they don’t agree with. They want economic freedom, but religious freedom is irrelevant. They are willing to defend the Constitution but ignore the Declaration of Independence’s promise of the pursuit of happiness. They don’t trust the government to do anything, yet they trust the government to define marriage, abortion, drug use, etc. Perhaps the last one is the most stupid and hypocritical of all.
Don’t get me wrong, liberals are hypocrites too. They trust the government to fix things and they like social programs, yet they don’t like the government defining things like marriage and drug use. They want legalized drugs, but they’re afraid of citizens who have gone through extensive background checks to carry a gun—people authorized by a government that liberals obviously trust can enforce all laws, such as gun laws on those who carry illegally.
They both suck in their extremes. And they both erode personal freedom. But I’m a Libertarian. What do I know?
